Manufacture

• Material. Refer to chemical composition table.

• Welding: All joints full penetration, double welded or single welded butt joints employing fusion welding process. Backing strips or rings, if used, must be removed after welding. Filler metal specifications detailed in A 358 are not included in this summary.

• Pipe Classes: Class 1 - Double welded by a process employing filler metal in all passes and completely radiographed. Class 2 - Double welded by a process employing filler metal in all passes. No radiography required. Class 3 - Single welded by a process employing filler metal in all passes and completely radiographed. Class 4 - As class 3 except the inside pipe surface weld may be made without filler metal. Class 5 - Double welded by a process employing filler metal in all passes. Spot radiography required.

• Heat treatment. Refer to heat treatment table and supplementary requirement S5.

• Marking on each length of pipe: Manufacturers name or brand, specification number, 'WR' if weld repaired, 'NPS' and schedule,

'NH' if no hydrotesting, Class number. Also final heat temperature: 'HT-O' if no final heat treatment, 'HT-temp' where 'temp' is the final stabilising treatment temperature if specified in Supplementary Requirement S5.

• Appearance. Finished pipe will have a workmanlike finish.

• Plate Defect Repair by Grinding. Defects may be repaired by machining or grinding, provided the wall thickness is not reduced below the minimum.

• Plate Defect Repair by Welding. Defects which give unsatisfactory wall thickens can be repaired by welding if the purchaser agrees. Repair welds must be suitably NDT examined or lengths pressure tested if repair depth is >1/4 wall thickness.

• Finish. Pipe will be free of scale and contaminating iron particles. Bright annealed pipe need not be pickled, or blasted. The purchaser may request a passivating treatment.
